1980's nostalgia is right! Nod I used to stare at this map as a child and let my mind wander down the paths and over the bridges and through the woods, imagining all the characters as I went. It still exists in my mind as a kind of aesthetic cornerstone, by which I mean, this is everything a storybook map should be, to me. Just perfect.

Beautiful place to live in :) I'd certainly like to visit it, at least. Reading one of your books is a ticket for it, right? ;)

I just had to pull out my copy of "The Tortoise Fair" to compare the maps in my book against the one you posted. They're exactly the same with the exception that the ones in my book have an overall brown color cast to them rather than the green, with a rich brown border. I've always loved maps like these. Even at my ripe old age, I still take pleasure in tracing the locations of the story, in this case in Farmer Bramble's field and on the bridge over the railroad track, against the locations on the map. This book has such wonderful illustrations and so many of the things that I love -- the horse-drawn gypsy caravan, a train, and a carousel. They remind me of a happier time when the world was much less complicated.

The map is still popular with children of all ages which of course includes me. :D

I'm told colours vary from one computer to another and certainly they vary from on print run of the books to another. The artwork for the map was lost so I can be sure about the original illustration.

They say the past isn't what it used to be, but it can look very attractive at times.

Happy New Year

Okay. In my own defense, you have to realize that I haven't seen any of my books for over three years, as they have all been packed up and in storage overseas. That, and I am somewhat of a dim-wit at times. Until you posted this, I never made the connection. You see, I have all these books! And they were some of my daughters' absolute favorites when she was growing up! I originally bought them for me (because of the art), but she loved having the stories read to her, and then when she got older, she gave them back to me ('cause she knew I enjoyed the art so much).

Lol. This is so weird. I feel like a fanboy all over again (I'm talking to the John Patience!).

I'm most extremely flattered Bob.

As it happens the publisher of the Fern Hollow books is closing down this week and the artwork has been returned to me (at the moment its in the UK with my sister.)
Half the stuff has been lost but it will be nice to have what remains because I'm fond of this old stuff.

I reckon I'm geting soft in my old age and its comforting to know that Fern Hollow retains a place in peoples memories.
